The Caring Companion Program is for people who are able to come in on a weekly basis to visit with a veteran.
Phoenix VA medical director Michael Welsh said the date when the full inspection of the nursing home will be completed and when residents can move back in is currently unknown. Arizona State Veteran Home-Phx is a nursing homes facility located in Phoenix, AZ. This state-owned and operated facility is set between the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Administration Medical Center and Steele Indian School Park. The 200 beds are divided into 150 long-term care beds, a 25-bed memory care unit, and a 25-bed Medicare/rehab-focused unit. Welsh said that the staff believes that rats are located in between the walls and ceilings, and have begun placing rat traps throughout the nursing home.

Arizona State Veteran Home-Phx is a nursing home located in Phoenix that offers nursing home care. "For us we were able to send them to some of our sister facilities which also follow the same mission and they are also a veteran center. Patient safety was first," said Kendricks. "We immediately started planning to get the residents out of that environment to a safer environment," said Stephanie Kendricks, chief nurse of the Phoenix VA center. "There has been no interaction between rodents, staff and veterans at all," Welsh said at the news conference. Further investigation in the facility showed more rats on the second floor, which was not occupied by residents.

Based on the volunteer's interests, they are matched with a veteran. Volunteers come in and do a variety of activities such as reading them the newspaper, playing a game of cards or taking them next door for a stroll in Steele Indian School park. Our veterans who do not have family members close by are usually placed in this program. This allows the veterans with minimal visitors to have someone in the community become their "adopted" family.
Welsh said that a worker at the Veteran Affairs nursing home noticed a crack in the ceiling of the staff office on July 22. This led to a deeper investigation that found rat activity on the first and second floors of the facility. The Community Living Center, the Veteran Affairs nursing home in Phoenix near 7th Street and Indian School Road, was closed due to rats being in the housing area, VA staff said on Monday during a news conference. In the year and a half she was there she was in the ICU three times for severe UTIs. Her final complaint was a sick server bringing food to their rooms where staff didn’t endured wearing masks. My Mother is one of five that have lost their life so far there because of Covid.

The Friends of Veterans Program is for people whose schedules are busy but who still want to make a personal connection with a veteran. The Special Event Escort program is for people who enjoy helping out with a one-day event such as escorting veterans on a casino trip or helping to serve a holiday meal. We send out e-mails to those interested in upcoming volunteer opportunities. An applicant is eligible for admission if the applicant is an honorably-separated veteran, or the spouse of a veteran. As a pre-requisite, the applicant must require skilled nursing care as determined by a physician. Occupational therapy is designed to improve daily living skills, while Speech therapy is intended to improve memory and swallowing disabilities. The Namaste program is a person-centered approach to late-stage dementia care developed by Joyce Simard.
They bring in all of the volunteers, we provide the supplies and they run the games. Hospice of the Valley sponsors a weekly "happy hour" complete with non-alcoholic beer and a variety of card games. We are looking for others to make a commitment to organize poker, pinochle or other games.
